The Dallas Mavericks have provided significant injury and roster updates following the NBA All-Star Break as the team enters a crucial portion of the regular season.
Dallas announced on Thursday that recently acquired forward Anthony Davis is “making good progress” in his recovery from a left adductor strain and will be reevaluated in two weeks.
The Mavericks are expected to reevaluate Davis, along with centers Derreck Lively and Daniel Gafford, on March 6, according to Grant Afseth of The Dallas Hoops Journal.
Lively has been sidelined since January 14 due to a stress fracture in his foot, while Gafford has not played since February 10 due to a right knee sprain.
This update comes during an important part of the year as Dallas has just 26 games remaining in the season and is looking to climb up the standings to avoid the play-in tournament.
Although Davis is seemingly making solid progress toward an eventual return to the court this season, Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd refused to say whether Davis will avoid surgery in his recovery.
“I’m not a doctor. That’s in 2 weeks. I think you’ll get a better understanding of what has to take place but right now he’s doing great. He’s in the weight room. He was shooting on the court. A lot of positive things for him. I don’t know if that means surgery, but I think we’re all excited to see him back to work,” said Kidd, according to Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News.
The Mavericks also provided updated injury information on forward PJ Washington and center Dwight Powell, stating that both players practiced on Thursday and could make their returns to the court on Friday against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Washington is currently listed as questionable for this matchup, while Powell is listed as doubtful.
Dallas also announced the signing of 7-foot-2-inch center Moses Brown to a 10-day contract, hoping to provide depth for the upcoming stretch of games.
Brown has been in the NBA since the 2019-20 season and has spent time with seven different franchises, including a stint with the Mavericks during the 2021-22 season, during which he averaged 3.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 6.5 minutes per game.
While Brown is unlikely to secure a spot on the roster for the remainder of the season, his presence will provide the necessary depth and defense needed to help the Mavericks over the next five games.
