Users of the social media platform X have likely noticed outages and intermittent availability on the network on Monday.
As of noon, three waves of outages have hit the platform, according to reports from Downdetector. At its peak around 9 a.m., more than 40,000 X outages were reported to the Downdetector website. Across the three outages, more than 350,00 users have reported problems with the platform, with 57% reporting issues with the app, 32% reporting problems with the website, and 11% reporting issues with server connection.
Of course, these were just reported outages. Many others likely experienced outages that were not reported to the Downdetector website.
A hacking group identifying itself as Dark Storm Team has claimed responsibility for initiating a DDoS attack on the platform, according to a posting on Telegram, a social media and messaging platform. A DDoS, or distributed denial-of-service attack, is a “malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service, or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic,” according to Cloudflare.com.
The Dark Storm Team is known for its sophisticated cyberattacks on other high-security systems. The pro-Palestinian group, founded in 2023, said in a post last month that it intended to unleash cyberattacks on the government websites of NATO countries, Israel, and countries that support Israel, Newsweek reported.
X and its owner, Elon Musk, confirmed the attack:
There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against ?.
We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.
