A missile strike by Russian forces hit a hotel in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, late in the evening on March 5, leaving at least four dead and more than 30 injured.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on social media that two Americans were among those staying at the hotel during the time of the attack, though they are believed to have survived.
Zelenskyy described the harrowing situation around the hotel.
“All night, a rescue operation continued in Kryvyi Rih at the site of a Russian missile strike. A ballistic missile struck an ordinary hotel. Just before the attack, volunteers from a humanitarian organization – citizens of Ukraine, the United States, and the United Kingdom – had checked into the hotel.
“They survived because they managed to get down from their rooms in time,” Zelenskyy wrote. “Unfortunately, four people were killed in this attack. My condolences to their families and loved ones.”
The Ukrainian president also said that more than 30 people were injured in the strike and had received medical assistance. He shared a video showing emergency services working at the site of the attack.

According to Zelenskyy’s post, other buildings near the hotel were also damaged in the blast.
An updated report from Ukranian News said that the deceased victims included a 13-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. Additionally, two injured victims received outpatient treatment, while 30 others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from “moderate” to “severe.”
A spokesperson from the U.S. State Department told Newsweek, “We are not aware of any U.S. citizen casualties at this time. We are monitoring the situation closely. We condemn this strike and extend our deepest condolences to the victims and to the families of all those affected.”
“Attacks like these are precisely why President Trump is committed to peace. It is time for the death and destruction to stop and for an end to this senseless war,” continued the spokesperson.
Karol Swiacki, the founder of the UK-based charity Ukraine Relief, was reportedly staying at the hotel at the time of the missile strike along with two Americans. In an interview with the BBC, Swiacki recounted the terrifying moment the hotel was hit.
“We took two steps and there was a big boom, absolute nightmare, everything just within seconds changed into a very apocalyptic news screams, alarms.”
“We are all safe, we didn’t have a scratch, it is incredible. We still don’t know how we survived this, honestly,” Swiacki said.
