Billionaire philanthropist George Soros is almost exclusively funding a political action committee that aims to elect Democrats in Texas, according to Federal Election Commission filings released Monday.
Two of the highest-paid consultants of that PAC are apparently alumni of Beto O’Rourke’s failed gubernatorial campaign, the PAC’s financial disclosures suggest.
Soros’ Democracy PAC II has given $750,000 this year to the Texas Majority PAC, which is in its first year of operation, Fox News reported.
The Federal Election Commission filings show Texas Majority PAC raised $752,040 in the same time period — meaning Soros’ PAC provided 99.7% of the group’s funds.
Public information on the operations of the Texas Majority PAC is limited. Texas incorporation records show the group was founded in December 2022. The group has a website at texasmajoritypac.com.
“Texas Majority PAC is a project dedicated to electing a Democrat to statewide office in Texas,” the website states. “We are conducting research to understand what it will take to win the state.”
“It’s time to elect a Democrat to statewide office in Texas. Let’s get to work,” the front page urges visitors.
Texas Majority PAC hosted an event this year with the Dallas County Democratic Party, according to mobilize.us.
“Texas Majority PAC is a project started in 2023 focused on growing our Democratic majority and winning statewide elections,” the event description reads. “Over the past few months, our team has been hard at work hosting listening sessions and researching what it’s going to take to turn Texas Blue and we want to hear from you.”
“Your involvement and input are key. We are hosting a community conversation with the Dallas County Democratic Party, where we’ll recap outcomes from the 2022 election cycle, hear from community leaders about their experiences volunteering and reaching voters, as well as provide strategy on how we’re going to flip Texas Blue together. We look forward to seeing you there.”
The group is hiring for three positions, according to recruitment website GainPower, including program managers for DFW and San Antonio.
The group’s financial report shows it spent more than $600,000 from January to June, mostly on consultant fees and travel.
The top expense was $95,574 to Lake Research Partners, a political consulting firm that has represented the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Clinton.
The next two highest expenses were consulting fees — $91,000 to Katherine Ann Fischer and $67,500 to Jason Lee.
A Katherine Ann Fischer served as a regional organizing director on Beto O’Rourke’s campaign for governor of Texas in 2022. A Jason Lee, who is also the son of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), served as deputy campaign manager in that race. It has not yet been confirmed that these are the same individuals. Fischer’s LinkedIn and Lee’s Twitter do not include any mention of Texas Majority PAC.
Among the group’s other expenses were $20,000 given to the Texas Democratic Party.
Texas Majority PAC did not respond to a request for comment.
