Criminals went on a tear through northwestern Dallas in March, bumping up the year-over-year crime rate in City Council Member Omar Narvaez’s District 6 by significant margins.

District 6 — which makes up the city’s northwest flank, running from Interstate 30 to Interstate 635 — saw an 11.7% increase in reports that month compared to March 2022.

Tragically, the most disturbing statistic is the spike in murders in the area. Last year, the Dallas Police Department did not log a single murder in Narvaez’s district in March. There were six this year, according to the City of Dallas Open Data crime analytics dashboard.

As alarming as this fact may be, this is not the only part of the city facing such gains: Dallas is suffering a citywide year-over-year increase in murders since the new year began, with 95 murders reported so far, a roughly 23.4% increase over 2022, year to date.

Residents of District 6 also endured hikes in several other crime categories this March.

Year over year, prostitution offenses soared by 190%, drug offenses jumped by about 31%, car burglaries increased by roughly 32%, and home and business burglaries spiked by more than 40%, according to City data.

Assault offenses also increased, with DPD recording a 20.4% year-over-year bump. The key driver in the statistic was a dramatic spike in aggravated assaults, which increased by 49% this March.

Less notable upticks were also logged in weapons law violations and reported incidents of vandalism and destruction of property.

A request for comment was sent to Council Member Narvaez’s office, but no response was received by press time.

The Dallas Express, The People’s Paper, believes that important information about the city, such as crime rates and trends, should be easily accessible to you. Dallas has more crime per capita than hotspots like Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and New York, according to data from the FBI’s UCR database.
