One person has been taken into custody after a man was found dead in the backyard swimming pool of a home on Indian Trail last week.

Miguel Santamaria Salgado, 40, was found unresponsive in a private pool in Rowlett, according to Fox 4 KDFW.

Salgado’s body was discovered around 8:30 a.m. on August 1 by a pool maintenance worker, who called 911.

When police arrived, a man took off on foot, a woman was transported to the hospital, and several children were removed from the home and put into the care of Child Protective Services.

The next-door neighbor, Kenneth Jones, saw three boys in the front yard as the police assessed the scene.

“You could tell the oldest little boy, he was probably about six or seven,” the neighbor told Fox 4. “He was taking it pretty hard.”

Rowlett police said there was no evidence of foul play, but narcotics were found at the scene and are believed to be involved with the incident, according to a press release.

Investigators are waiting on a toxicology report from the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police announced in the August 4 press release that a man had been taken into custody in connection with the case, but the suspect’s identity has not been released.

The home is a short-term rental on Airbnb, but it is unclear how long the current tenants lived there before the death.

Rowlett is about 20 miles northeast of Dallas, which has seen its fair share of murder — 154 homicides so far this year, up from 146 during the same period last year, according to police data updated on August 8.

Nearby Fort Worth has seen measurable success in reducing crime by instituting a focused police force that includes private security in its downtown area.

“With this many eyes and ears on the street, people who are up to no good feel very uncomfortable,” said Andy Taft, who runs Downtown Fort Worth Inc.

A City analysis found that the Dallas Police Department is short about 900 police officers, as a city the size of Dallas needs roughly 4,000 police officers, and it currently only employs 3,100.
