Students and community members are in mourning after a 15-year-old student from Frisco Independent School District was killed in an accident on his way to school in the early hours of Wednesday.

A memorial has been placed at the spot where Landon Bourque was struck by a truck while trying to cross Independence Parkway at George Washington Drive with his bike at about 5:30 a.m.

As previously reported in The Dallas Express, the driver of the truck had stopped and tried to render aid to the young man, but he did not survive.

Christine Jefferis told Fox 4 KDFW that her husband had arrived at the intersection shortly after the collision.

“He was really shaken up to see what happened and was kind of one of the first folks seeing it and waited for the officer to arrive. Somebody was giving CPR to the young man on the street, but apparently he didn’t make it which was very sad,” Jefferis said.

“There were several folks from the neighborhood out here with kids that walk to school very, very upset, crying and just feeling terrible for the family,” she added.

Bourque’s damaged bike and a pair of headphones were recovered at the scene.

According to McKinney police, the investigation into the crash is still ongoing, and no charges have been filed.

Bourque was about to embark on the first day of his sophomore year at Heritage High School, where he was part of the Coyotes football team.

Practice had been scheduled that morning, with several players and their parents driving past the fatal crash that same morning.

“When we drove by, he saw it was Landon’s bike. It was awful, very awful,” recounted Sabrina Elrod, whose son Cohen had been a good friend of Bourque’s, according to NBC 5 DFW.

Friends and community members later placed flowers where the accident happened.

“We all just chatted and talked about our favorite memories of him and put the flowers down for him,” recounted Hayven Clark, a friend of Bourque’s, according to Fox 4. “Amazing personality. He always enjoyed making jokes and we made jokes out of him all the time and he never took it offensively.”

“He was a great kid, you know. He was a super funny guy. He was always trying to be happy, always trying to lighten the mood. He never really brought anyone down. He was just someone I was glad to have around,” said Nolan Swyres, another friend of Bourque’s, according to NBC 5.

“Everybody knows that he does ride his bike often,” Swyers told Fox 4.
