The university also hosts tours through Casa Ortiz, a building constructed in 1830 with gardens and a view of the Rio Grande. Campus visitors can also watch a show at the Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium, which is operated by the university, for shows on astronomy, science, and other topics, including dinosaurs, whales, and weather.

Those traveling and looking for family-friendly activities can tour the city with the Webb County Heritage Foundation, which tours the town and some museums, including the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum, located in the downtown San Agustin de Laredo Historic District. The district includes the San Agustin Cathedral, an impressive church built in 1872.

George Washington’s Birthday Celebration in Laredo gathers around 400,000 people each year. The celebration became official in 1923 and has expanded ever since. According to the organization’s website, this year’s iteration was held from January 7-March 4 and included 28 events.

Those planning a summer trip can attend the Laredo International Sister Cities Festival. The free event is scheduled for July 14-16 this year and boasts around 200 vendors from different areas of Mexico.

Elsewhere in Laredo, golfing enthusiasts can enjoy 18 holes overlooking the Rio Grande at the par-72 Max A. Mandal Municipal Golf Course.
