Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) introduced a House resolution last week to designate July as “American Pride Month” in a direct challenge to so-called “woke” corporations that celebrated LGBT Pride Month in June.

According to the text of HR 571, the resolution aims to “memorialize and increase awareness of the monumental achievements of the United States of America and the countless number of patriots throughout her history.” the West Point graduate from Houston said, speaking with

Hunt’s proposed resolution, filed last Friday, comes after many corporations and the Biden administration celebrated LGBT Pride Month, issuing declarations of support to the community and deploying LGBT-themed marketing campaigns. At the White House, the Progress Pride flag was displayed alongside two American flags.

“This resolution serves as a challenge to this White House and woke corporations,” Hunt told Fox News. “Will they fly Old Glory as high and as proudly in July as they did the LGBTQ flag in June?”

Hunt said he intends to post pro-America messages on Twitter all month long with the hashtag #AmericanPrideMonth. He posted the first one on July 1.

The narrator of a video associated with the campaign, quoting in part former President Ronald Reagan’s farewell address, says:

“We need to do a better job of getting across that America is freedom. Freedom of speech. Freedom of religion. Freedom of enterprise. And freedom is special and rare. It’s fragile. We’ve got to teach history based not on what’s in fashion but what’s important. I’m warning of an eradication of that, of the American memory that could result ultimately in an erosion of the American spirit.”

Hunt told Breitbart News that Reagan was his inspiration for the campaign.

“In the words of President Reagan, ‘If we forget what we did, we won’t know who we are,'” Hunt told the news outlet. “In Reagan’s final address to the nation, he warned us what would happen if we ceased teaching future generations about our history and most importantly, what it means to be an American.”

Hunt, who came from a military family and flew Apache helicopters during his tour of service, said in a news release that “American exceptionalism means something to him.”

“I want it to mean something again to future generations of Americans,” said Hunt, who was first elected to Congress in 2022. “American history is worth teaching, it’s worth celebrating, and it’s worth remembering. I’m urging my colleagues on both sides to enthusiastically support this resolution.”
