The body of a missing paddleboarder was found near former President Barack Obama’s residence on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, police said on Monday.
The 43-year-old man’s remains were detected by the Massachusetts Environmental Police with sonar technology, police said.
His body was pulled from 8-foot-deep waters approximately 100 feet away from the shore at around 10 a.m. ET Monday.
Police in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard confirmed Monday morning that the search for an unidentified man had been called off.
Emergency crews were alerted to the emergency near the town’s Great Pond on Sunday night.
“Please remain away from this area and allow emergency responders to perform their search,” Edgartown police said in a statement that evening.
Several agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard searched the pond, state police said.
A Coast Guard helicopter was on site, and Massachusetts State Police provided aerial support. The state police also deployed an underwater recovery unit with assistance from the environmental police.
The recovery of the body took place next to Obama’s seven-bedroom, 6,892-square-foot mansion. The Obamas bought a 30-acre waterfront property at 79 Turkeyland Cove Road near the area in 2019.
It is unclear if the former First Family was home at the time of the incident.
