Chip and Joanna Gaines of the TV show “Fixer Upper” have listed one of their best-known properties for auction after years of renovations.

Cottonland Cottage first appeared on the Gaines’ show in a six-part series, “Fixer Upper: The Castle,” which aired in 2022. The property, constructed in 1890, was designated a historic landmark in 1977 and was eventually purchased by the couple in 2019 for an undisclosed amount, per House Beautiful.

The historic castle helped to inspire the name of the neighborhood where it is located, Castle Heights. Joanna wrote about the first time she and Chip saw the house in a July 2022 blog post about the property.

“The first time Chip drove me by the old abandoned house, I watched his eyes get big, and I could see excitement building as he looked up at the castle’s muscular gray walls, stone tower, and imposing front door. I knew in that instant that this place had found its way into his heart,” wrote Joanna.

“Yet when I looked up at the downtrodden castle, all I could see was an incredibly daunting project — not to mention the place looked haunted. At that point, though, the castle wasn’t even on the market,” she added. “And for nearly two decades, Chip watched and waited, persistently putting in offers whenever the castle was relisted — each one passed over for someone else, while very few improvements appeared to be made.”

The Gaines’ real estate company, Magnolia Realty, announced the couple’s decision to sell in a Facebook post, noting that Chip and Joanna are “ready for someone new to write the next chapter in this historic home’s story.”

The mansion, located on 1.6 acres, is listed by Magnolia Realty as 6,176 square feet with four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. The home also has a formal dining room, great room, card room, library, tower, and a conservatory.

Concierge Auctions will handle the sale in partnership with Melissa Miller and Amanda Nesbitt of Magnolia Realty, according to Mansion Global. Bidding will open on July 20, and end on July 27, and approved bidders must have a $100,000 deposit and proof of funds.

Laura Brady of Concierge Auctions said an auction can help unique properties, such as the castle, sell for the correct value.

“The castle is historic and it also has been redesigned and renovated, and so the value of the property is very difficult to define,” said Brady, per Mansion Global. “It’s going to be worth what the highest bidder is willing to bid.”
