The University of Texas at Dallas has hired a new men’s basketball coach.
The school announced this week that assistant coach Jared Fleming was promoted to the position, replacing record-setting head coach Terry Butterfield, who retired last month.
“After a national search that warranted a large number of highly qualified candidates, Jared set himself apart by his passion and level of preparedness to take this next step,” UT Dallas Athletic Director Angela Marin said in a press release.
“Jared is in a unique position as he has chosen to represent UTD both as a former student-athlete and later as an assistant coach. Jared will continue to advance our men’s basketball program in all aspects of academic, athletic, and community/alumni engagement, and I look forward to the future of the program under Jared’s leadership.”
Fleming was an honorable mention All-American Southwest Conference player for the Comets who helped the program win multiple conference titles between 2006 and 2010. He joined the staff as an assistant in 2015 and became just the third coach since the program began in 1998.
In that time, UTD won 410 games and made seven NCAA Division III national tournament appearances.
“First off, I want to thank Angela Marin for giving me the opportunity to lead this program,” Fleming said in the Monday announcement. “The tradition and foundation that Terry Butterfield put in place over the last 23 years have been incredible, and I have been blessed to play a role in that for the last eight seasons. I am tremendously excited for the opportunity to lead our program into the next era in our basketball history! I look forward to continuing to build on the proud tradition of UTD men’s basketball.”

— Former Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly announced he is transferring to Memphis. Quinerly played three seasons for the Crimson Tide, averaging 11.7 points and 3.7 assists after transferring from Villanova.
— Baylor will face Duke in a basketball game at New York’s Madison Square Garden on December 20. The game will be the second meeting between the programs. Duke won the first meeting, 78-71, in the 2010 Elite Eight.
— TCU’s men’s basketball team will play four exhibition games in London and Paris during a 10-day European tour. The Horned Frogs will also play Clemson in Toronto on December 9 as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame series.
