The family of an 11-year-old who was shot and killed is speaking out about what happened.

On Saturday, Dallas police responded to reports of a shooting in the 6400 block of Royal Lane at 2:15 a.m., as reported by The Dallas Express. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a woman and an 11-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds, according to police.

The woman was identified by family members as Jocelyn Green, and the boy was her son Jeremiah.

According to Jocelyn’s stepfather, Aaron Scott, his stepdaughter’s ex-boyfriend, allegedly showed up at the family’s home and began banging on the door.

When no one answered the door, the ex-boyfriend allegedly fired shots at the home, according to Scott.

Members of the family spoke to the local news outlet WFAA and expressed disbelief and heartache at what occurred that morning.

“It’s heartbreaking, you re-live it, it won’t go away,” said Scott.

Scott said Jocelyn is listed in stable condition at a hospital as she recovers from surgery on her hand, per WFAA.

Jocelyn’s brother Cameron Hardeman told WFAA he found his sister covered in blood and Jeremiah dead.

“She had blood on her,” said Hardeman about his sister. “She said, ‘He killed my son, he killed my son!’”

“You know, he’s only eleven. He didn’t do nothing wrong. This shouldn’t have happened,” Scott continued.

The family said Jeremiah was excited to start middle school and was also on the honor roll.

“[He was] talking about the classes he wanted to take, and how he wanted to play football when he got older. A lot of dreams…a lot of dreams cut short,” Hardeman told WFAA.

Scott told WFAA that the entire family was home at the time of the shooting, six of whom were children.

As reported by The Dallas Express, police located the suspect and alleged shooter, 30-year-old Jakeith Huntley, in the nearby city of Glenn Heights and took him into custody.

He is charged with capital murder.

Violent crime continues to spike in Dallas as murder and non-negligent manslaughter have seen an increase of 25%, according to the Dallas Police Department’s most recent Daily Crime Briefing.
