The Dallas Express launched the first episode of its podcast Sunday, marking its foray into long-form video content focused on the issues that matter most.

Hosted by co-founder and board member Sarah Zubiate Bennett, the show invited her husband, hospitality real estate executive and publisher of The Dallas Express Monty Bennett, to be its first guest.

You can check out the first episode here:

Bennett spoke about how the current state of news media spurred him to found a fact-based alternative to the kinds of outlets that typically exhibit significant political bias.

“People just want the news without all of the storytelling and without all the bias and the angles,” Bennett said. “I wanted to start it in order to just be able to have the news delivered in an unbiased way so that people themselves can make decisions on issues.”

He went on to note that The Dallas Express dedicates itself to holding public officials to account, pointing to our Crime Boss and Bad Apple series, features intended to highlight the city’s dire public safety situation and the local school system’s poor track record when it comes to student outcomes.

“One of the things that absolutely breaks my heart and I want to see change is the 50,000 students in DISD that are in D or F schools,” Bennett said, referring to the accountability ratings given to campuses by the Texas Education Agency.

Bennett explained how a number of factors have inhibited Dallas’ growth even as surrounding communities enjoy an inrush of new residents and businesses.

“Our police force seems to be doing a great job with what they have, but they need more officers, and they need more tools, and we need to give it to them because if you don’t solve the crime problem, nothing else matters,” Bennett said.

Bennett’s interview was followed by an appearance by The Dallas Express’ social media and brand manager, Bettina Bronfman. She and Zubiate Bennett discussed how her passion for art and design led her to Dallas, where she got to start deploying her talents in the service of non-partisan journalism.

The episode ended with a segment on a recent family excursion undertaken by Zubiate Bennett and her children to get new bicycles at Bike Mart’s Preston Hollow location.
