An accident on Interstate 30 east of Dallas killed two and closed the freeway on Monday morning, police said.

The fatal crash involved an 18-wheeler around 8:30 a.m. near Royse City, the city’s police department said. Royse City is about 30 miles from downtown Dallas.

Neither of the victims has been identified, a Dallas TV station reported.

Royse City Police Chief Kirk Aldridge said in a written statement that no other injuries have been reported in connection with the crash.

As the scene unfolded Monday morning, emergency crews were sent to the eastbound I-30 and FM 35 exit, police said.

Major traffic backups occurred in both directions as rescue crews arrived and investigated the scene. Some drivers reported being at a standstill for more than three hours.

The 18-wheeler was westbound on I-30 when it crossed into the eastbound lanes and crashed into three cars, police said.

One car caught fire and was fully engulfed until rescuers arrived.

The eastbound lanes of I-30 between FM 35 and FM2642 were closed as of early Monday afternoon.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office were assisting Royce City police in the investigation.
