A retired police officer has received a wave of support from the Plano community after having to undergo the amputation of both his legs.

Larry Frazier is now home after several stretches in the hospital due to an accident in February.

Frazier had served in the Plano Police Department for 29 years before joining Plano Independent School District as a security specialist in 2009. His retirement, unfortunately, kicked off with a medical ordeal.

“Last day of February he got two hours of retirement, fell and split his toe in half,” explained Frazier’s daughter Courtney DeLizza, according to CBS News.

The toe had to be amputated after the accident, but when complications arose shortly thereafter due to undisclosed underlying health conditions, both of his lower legs had to be removed.

“He said, ‘I’ve got to go, it’s either life or lose my legs,’ and he chose to lose his legs so he could be with us,” DeLizza said, according to CBS News.

Plano PD informed the community about Frazier’s health issues on Facebook in late June, asking for continued prayers and support.

“Throughout his 43 years of public service, Larry touched many lives and made many friends. Larry gave his all to the City of Plano because of his love for service and this community,” read the post.

Several users commented, offering Frazier words of encouragement.

“Thank you Officer Frazier for your time as an SRO for Plano ISD! I’m thankful for your service and dedication to me and my fellow students, and praying for your recovery,” wrote Facebook user Greg Parks.

“Prayers to you Larry as my husband and I fondly remember you at Plano East as our SRO in the 80’s. You were always available to listen to high schoolers who needed to vent. Thank you for your service,” remarked user Karma Travis.

The Plano community stepped up big time for Frazier when his family started a GoFundMe with a goal of $27,000 to allow him more mobility in his home and buy medical equipment.

“Renovations on the bathrooms have begun. It is just beginning, but we already feel that it will make a difference!” the family wrote on the GoFundMe on Wednesday.

Frazier and his family have been blown away by the community’s support.

“… [T]hank you for the kind words, prayers, support and sharing his story! It really means a lot to not only us but for him. He needs this to stay strong and get through this,” DeLizzo wrote on Facebook. “As all the Plano PD do, my dad laid his life on the line every day and now he needs all of us more than ever. Thank you isn’t enough but that’s all I got. So thank you.”

As of Friday, the fundraiser was close to reaching its goal, with $24,085 raised.
