A collision resulting in a spill of a popular summertime treat closed multiple roads on Monday.

The Plano Police Department reported on Twitter that a crash occurred southbound on U.S. Highway 75 on July 3 at 1:49 p.m., causing a large amount of watermelons to break apart and scatter.

While both the passenger and the driver in the vehicle were transported to the hospital, neither was badly injured from the crash, according to Fox 4 KDFW.

While the closure was caused by what was originally described as a “large amount of debris,” Plano PD later confirmed that it was, in fact, fragments of watermelon. The vehicle had been carrying a load of watermelon at the time of the crash, the force of which violently dispersed the fruit across the roadway.

This treat has been commonly served at Fourth of July celebrations around the metroplex and across the country, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.

Multiple lanes were closed as a result of the spill. Images captured after the crash show pieces of watermelon scattered across multiple lanes of traffic.

Anyone who has ever played a game with a greased watermelon understands the potential hazards this particular debris might have posed to public safety.

“As a result, ALL LANES from Spring Creek to Park Blvd on SB 75 are currently closed, including the southbound service road AND NB 75 HOV lane, and the first lane next to it,” reported Plano PD in a Twitter post at the time of the crash.

“If you are heading south, please EXIT at Spring Creek Pkwy,” the post continued.

Following cleanup, the highway lanes were reopened hours later.

The circumstances behind the crash itself are currently unknown. Nonetheless, some residents reacted to the incident by calling for changes to enhance public safety, such as lowering speed limits and increasing the presence of law enforcement.

“It is time reduce speed limit to 60Mph on US75 from McKinney area. Think and save lives,” commented Jegan Babu on the original post.
